School Disaster Preparedness and Mental Health Resilience Seminar-Workshop

Last September 7-9, 2021, Pagsulhugon National High School (PNHS) conducted a school-based in-service training (refer to DepEd Order 29 s. 2021, School Calendar and Activities for School Year 2021-2022, V. GUIDELINES No. 22) for teachers for the school year 2021-2022 entitled “School Disaster Preparedness and Mental Health Resilience Seminar-Workshop” with a theme: “Building a Safe and Adaptive Culture for an Ensured Learning Continuity for Students” at PNHS Multi-Purpose Hall following the prescribed IATF health protocols. This is a three-day training related to recently conducted Division Capability Building on School Risk Reduction Management Plan, Contingency Plan and School Preparedness in the New Normal (see Leyte Division Memorandum No. 283 s 2021). The training aims to equip PNHS teachers with comprehensive and integrated knowledge, skills, and attitude on efficient disaster preparedness and contingency plan and capacitate teachers who can contribute to the attainment of safer, adaptive, resilient educational environment towards sustainable development as embedded in Philippine DRRM Framework. It is also considered as a Brigada Eskwela activity in preparation for the opening of classes (mandated in DepEd Memo No. 048 s 2021) to ensure the conduct of activities related to the following: (1) Psychological Interventions & Debriefing in partnership with stakeholders; and (2) Measures in School Safety and Preparedness.

The training was led by the active PNHS school head, Maria Victoria V. Dingding, DevEdD, and crafted by the following training proponents: Joshua B. Udtujan (School Disaster Risk Reduction and Management-Junior High School Coordinator); Maria Theresa M. Herbolingo (School Training Coordinator); and Dahna Acebedo (Master Teacher I). It was made successful through the active lecture-demonstration of the following resource speakers: Dahna T. Acebedo; Mary Grace G. Rondina; Maria Theresa M. Herbolingo; Joshua B. Udtujan; Francis Marie M. Miranda; SFO2, Caellette L. Gianan; Hon. Roland B. Riel; Hon. Jose L. Laurente; and Hon. Janrey B. Domingo. Smooth flow of the training was well-observed through the efforts and collaboration of the Program Management Team, twenty-nine (29) teacher-participants and program host, Ms. Aina O. Dondoyano.
The training objectives were achieved and it ended well. Teachers were equipped with comprehensive and integrated knowledge, skills, and attitude on efficient disaster preparedness and contingency plan. They were capacitated to be able to contribute to the attainment of safer, adaptive, resilient educational environment towards sustainable development as embedded in Philippine DRRM Framework. School DRRM, WASH Program, and school operational safety and health standards was successfully introduced. Contingency plan, communication plan, and school-based DRRM Plan was designed and developed. Lastly, teachers were provided with Psychological First Aid, Mental Health, and Psychosocial Support.
